They can be difficult to find, follow, and photograph. However, Shetland has the highest density of otters in Europe and is probably one of the best-studied populations in the UK. This alone makes it one of the best places in Europe to see otters. What makes it even better is the fact that in Shetland otters spend a lot of their time foraging during the day, significantly increasing your chances of watching and photographing otters.
Shetland is the best place in the UK to photograph otters because of the density of otters living along the coastline, often multiple family groups. The coastlines are also excellent for photography. Having photographed otters on many coastlines in Scotland, Shetland for me stands out as some of the best shores for following and accessing otters.
Number of people:
- Maximum of 2 people per group.
For an incredible otter photography experience, we keep the group size intimate and cosy. To ensure a positive encounter and respect the sensitive nature of these fantastic creatures, we limit the maximum group size to two. By maintaining smaller groups, we create a peaceful and harmonious environment where everyone can truly immerse themselves in the magic of otter photography.
This thoughtful approach guarantees that each participant enjoys a fantastic and personalized experience. You'll have ample opportunity to observe and capture these magnificent creatures up close, without overwhelming them or their natural habitat.

Clothing and Requirements:
When preparing for your outdoor adventure, it's essential to gear up appropriately for optimal comfort and convenience. Be sure to don warm attire, including a snug hat, insulating gloves, a reliable waterproof coat, and durable trousers. Additionally, investing in a pair of sturdy walking boots or footwear will provide the necessary support for traversing various terrains.
To enhance your experience in the wilderness, consider selecting jackets and trousers that minimize noise disruption while in motion. Opting for garments crafted from soft, supple fabrics allows for stealthy movement without distracting rustling sounds. However, if you don't possess such specialized gear, don't worry, your regular jackets will still suffice.
By following these recommendations, you'll be well-equipped for your outdoor escapades, ensuring comfort, protection, and the ability to move with ease. Embrace the thrill of exploration while staying prepared for any weather conditions that may come your way.
